I ordered a LCC from 1SKS on Monday and they only had the bead blasted blade and the coated blade. I read on the forums here that the bead blast blade wasn't all that good so I decided to go with the coated blade and I was just wondering how good the coating is. Thanks.

I think it is the best of the three blade coatings, but that is just my opinion. The black will show more scratches if used a lot, but offers much better corrsion resistance than the BB and SW finishes.

Enjoy your new knife!

Chris

I agree. The black finish will show wear in time, but it will maintain it's corrosion-resistance. It's just a matter of cosmetics. Mine is bead-blasted. I just wipe it down with a Tuf-Cloth and have had no probs. It's an incredible knife. Enjoy it. Let us know what you think of it.

I sure as heck HOPE it's a good coating, as that is the style that I ordered, too. My understanding is that it is a titanium carbonitride, as opposed to the BT stuff that Benchmade uses. I HATE that BT coating.

Sure will be glad when mine gets here... I've been waiting almost 2 weeks now.....

Microtech's latest black coating is a black ti boride that is about 90RC hardness, it doesn't scratch off. It will look like it is marking but what you are seeing is the particles of what rubbed against it embeded in the black. Clean them and good as new. MT has only been using the black ti boride a couple of months.

I received my LCC today and it is the nicest knife I own. Lock up is solid and the edge is very sharp. I haven't used it to cut anything yet but it feals like it would cut anything. Chief, do you (or anybody else) know exactly how long MT has benn using thier new black coating because mine was made 9/2000 and I was wondering if it has the new stuff on it that you were talking about.

Also, Chief, could you tell me how one can tell if they got the aluminum or titanium bolster? I also asked this over on the Microholics forum, in the "Gen 1, 2, 3 and 4 LCC/DA" thread. Thanks.

John, glad you got yours so quickly. Hopefully I get mine real soon...

The first MTs that I know of with the new black ti boride coating are the 11/2000 UDTs. I think the 12/2000 LCC/DAs have it and any black 2001 MTs are the boride finish. Here is a link to pictures and descriptions of the differences in Gen 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Rockspyder,

The aluminum bolsters are hard anodized black, production titanium bolsters are natural color with a beadblast finish, some of the customs have had satin finishes on the titanium bolsters.

OK, so it looks like I have a Gen 1 black blade. The web site says the black blades are Titanium Carbonitride. Is that what you are calling "Black Ti"?

Sorry to keep asking questions, but I'm just trying to figure out if I'm gonna have to baby the coating, or if it is more robust than Benchmades "Black-T" coating.

You have the titanium carbonitride. While Microtechs black is much more robust than BMs BT2, it will show wear. Microtech's new black ti boride is very, very tough, and I would bet other companies will be using it sometime in the future.

Cool. Thanks Chief.

Wasn't there some talk of some boride type coating on the new BM's this year?

{edit-Just went and looked at the Benchmade site, and they are calling the coating on some of their new knives "boron carbide" coating. Models 450 and 770, for example. Looks like maybe they've already made the switch?}
