Went the the local knife store in my area, and besides the fact that the manager was truly the finest example of ignorant redneck rudeness, I got to handle a LCC for the first time. Very very impressive feel and form, now I understand why so many of you like them

For the last week or so I've been drueling over the SOCOM ELITE, and was about to buy one, but now I honestly can't decide. Which brings me to my quesiton...

Tactical Version LCC (while I can still get one) or Manual Socom Elite?

This knife will be used for all the normal day to day cutting functions, but will also serve as a defensive knife at my edged weapons self defense classes, and in actual defense if needed. Normally I like 4" folders the most, but that LCC had a great feel.

Just looking for what you would choose, sorry if this is an over-done question, but Microtech's are not my normal game yet

It sounds like your heart was really set on the SOCOM Elite. Follow your instincts and get the SOCOM Elite now and enjoy it. Then later on, get the LCC.

Sorry to confuse you but my opinion would be a Al Mar SERE 2000. Yiikes, what a knife. If you have never handled one you are missing a real sensation. You can find them, on line for about $125. And they are worth a lot more than that.

Please, don't get me wrong. You would not be disappointed with either that you are currently looking at. But the SERE is great and tough.

El Cid nailed the issue...

Your instincts are leaning toward the SOCOM. A defensive folder got to feel like it's part of you.

Both represent the best of manufactured knives.

I would go for the Elite now and if you are so inclined, later the LCC.

The Elite is very fast handling for a large folder and it carries well in a wide variety of positions. It's extremely versitile - can be used for everthing from food prep in a campsite or kitchen to self defense.

But you really can't go wrong either way.

Something else to consider is that Microtech has just discontinued the manual Socom Elite, so now is probably a good time to grab one if you want a new one.

Ack !! Ran into small snag, what is the difference between the Elite's Old blade grind and the New blade grind? Are they both the 0.174" thick? Hmm, someone out there will have this answer

Blade is the same thickness and profile. The grind pattern is different. The earlier, "pre-pro" grind, the so-called "Brend" grind features a more pronounced swedge reaching about to the center line of the blade.

The current grind is much more shallow. It provides a bit more overall blade "thinniss".

I think most Microholics find that the earlier grind is better looking and more desirable from a collector viewpoint.

Unfortunately, I cannot post a picture, but maybe someone else can.

I never handled an LCC because I don't like the looks. But my SOCOM Elite is a beautiful, strong, sharp, tough piece of equipment, fits my hand like it was custom made for me, and is so well balanced, I don't notice the weight.

And yes, they may not be available much longer. You'll get another shot at the LCC later.

Go for the SE.

Ok, thanks to everyone's help and chief's pictures, I have made my decision. I am going to get:

Microtech Socom Elite
New Grind
Black Blade
Serrated Edge

Off to every site it take to find one

If I can't find a black blade, then I guess I'll have to settle for a stonewash.

Thanks all

p.s. - The LCC will be mine at some point

Its here !! :) The Socome Elite arrived today, thanks Frank...

I got the stone washed serrated blade. Many impressive things about this knife, any only one minor dissapointment, but will wait till the end for that. First off, what a wicked blade, good god. 0.17" really is a long way from 0.125" like most of my folders. Then there are the serrations, talk about effective. I've done some cutting tests, and these things just rip right through anything. Curious...what are important things to remember when designing serration patterns? I know Microtech like most manufacturers improves them all the time, but I don't know the physics behind them.

Handle is just about perfect for me, that was a worry I had during ordering. Most production knives I order, the handle never fits my hand right. My EDC is wonderful, with plenty of room at the butt for grip. This socom is great too, and with that small ridged thumb ramp area on the blade spine, the handle is perfect.

Lanyard, well lets just say I'm going to admire this one, till I learn how to do it right myself :D I love having it, and it would be my luck I wouldn't be able to get it back on for a week or so after removing it :)

Ok, now the only downside, in my very humble opinion is the clip. For such a massive well thought through knife I was expecting a serious clip. Right out of the box, my clip as a slight vertical play, and I'm worried it will bend up easily as ALL my other folders have done, and I do mean all others. Is there anyone that could make me a custom heavy duty clip to fit my socom? and if so how long would you need the knife?

Thanks to all for convincing me to stick with my original choice. I'm extremely pleased with the Socom Elite. Take care.....

Good luck with the Socom Elite. I am continuously amazed at the rock solid quality of mine and the ease with which it can be carried in a variety of positions.

Today I carried mine IWB, right side for the entire day with no discomfort. And this is not a small knife. I am what I consider "average" size (5 feet 11, 175lbs.) and am able to carry the SE just about anywhere.

Use and carry it. It gets even better with use. :)

I can't believe that MT is discontinuing the SOCOM ELITE. It hasn't been out very long. I thought MT was going to make a manual tanto version but they just made a auto tanto version.

I think you made the right decision going with the socom. I have an LCC manual, plain edge, stonewash and I just ordered two mini-socoms tonight(one is from my family for my birthday, the other is for my uncle from me for his birthday later this month). Don't get me wrong, the LCC is my favorite knife at this time, and I don't suspect the socom will displace that. But the LCC does have one disadvantage: as far as I can remember, it's the first knife, besides my balisongs, that has EVER slipped from my hand while opening(Take note that I was snapping it open with intertia, and not opening it with the thumb stud). I've heard the LCCs with the green scales have more traction, but the LCC with carbon fiber is slick-as-snot. No doubt about it, the LCC is the most overall impressive knife I've ever held in my hand. The advantage of the socom is it has more traction on the handle. Which I would prefer for a knife that you intend to carry for work as well as self defense.
