Is it just me, or does the LE BWM seem like the poor man's SHBM? I'm having a hard time talking myself out of a CG and a LE....

Absolutely right .... but the LE is not cheap ....

True.

Haven't got a BWM yet, still waiting. When it arrives, I'll compare it to some SHBMs and let you know what I think.

Just looking at them, I think they're quite different knives. But, we'll see.:)

I wouldn't say it's poor mans at 600+tx+shipping, but it is a nice modern take on a SHBM

It would be interesting OP if you have a SAR8 to compare with the BWM....I have a SAR8 and wonder if the BWM may be a bit better for the weight .... I have a Basic 9 which is a fair bit lighter and the same size as the SAR8 and am pondering whether to move the SAR on for a BWM? I think they will be about the same weight....but not entirely sure...

I would imagine the SAR8 is a decent bit lighter than the BWBM, even given the greater thickness. The BWBM and NMSFNO are within a few grams of each other on my scale, and I can't imagine the SAR8 being as heavy as the NMSFNO at the same length, but with very different blade shapes and depths.

If they ever do a CG SAR8 (ie cheap enough that I can afford it), I would love to do the comparison myself.

If it was a Poor mans SHBM, I could afford one.:foot::o It's just a less expensive option to the SHBM. Still pretty spendy though. :)

I haven't seen SHBM's (CG's) go for less than @$900 in a while. If anyone knows of a $600 SHBM, please email me, I'll take it:D Also, at this price point the BWM is a satin LE. Yes it's expensive, but still at least $200-$300 cheaper than the SHBM's.

I think it is the rich man's Dogfather:cool::thumbup:

Initially I thought the same, based strictly on the appereance alone. Not the so with the LE, it seems takes on a whole different look with that saber grind. Then I held the BWM and realized that they are worlds apart.

However, I should note that I have a DDF w/ a saber grind, so it is a little more hefty than a DFLE.

I still enjoy the DDF, BUT INFI is for me:thumbup:

Bussecollector.com has the SHBM as $347 in 1999 .... maybe more for the Satin version?

Allowing for the time that has passed .... 11 years .... have things doubled inflation wise over that period? I guess they probably have ....

However it makes you see the value in a CG BWBM which you can strip and give a ghetto satin finish to though .... definately good VFM in that option ....

I keep checking Horn Dogs fully convexed ghetto satin BWBM and really fancy one....

However some time ago I splashed out on some thin Hossum Combat Machete's and feel I have that base covered when these blades are 12 inches long and I prefer the extra length on a light knife like this.... but I do quite see the extra chopping potential of the LE version as being "seperate" and "distinct" .... I have a DFLE though which in fairness is a hell of a knife for a none Infi blade ....

Money being "tight" right now I just want to try to avoid "duplication" too much ... but the back of my mind keeps saying "buy from the shop before you regret it and have to buy more expensively from the exchange" ....

Decisions.....decisions .... only wish money was more readily available.....

So, rich/poor analogies aside, where do you think the LE fits into the family "chopper" spectrum. Which current or past offering, do you think it would will most closely resemble in feel and/or performance?

Thanks,

GregB

I think you're right picking the SHBM ... it might be a little heavier with the sabre grind ...but take the option of fully convexing it which will lighten it and you probably have a SHBM with "more" potential from the fully convexed grind for chopping .... IMO from chopping a fair bit with all grinds ... fully convex "bites" deepest and throws chips of wood easiest ....

I am very tempted to get one to be a lighter belt option to my NMFBM ....

Infact I might sell a rare FBM Satin Combat model to do so ....

Okay, now that the LE's have landed. How does it compare to the SHBM? I know that some you you Hogs have both. Do tell... Inquiring piglets want to know:D

Thanks,

GregB

That is about the weight of a FSH at .25 .....so the LE version looks to be an ideal light/fast chopper on weight ....:cool:

I have high hopes on mine when it comes ....
