Well, I am on my second blade. I have the tip and back edge centered. When I eyeball down the length of the blade I can tell that it is leaning slightly. What should I do?
1. Just file flat on the side thats leaning?
2. Let it go and get a better center line next time?

You cant even tell unless you eyeball from tip down so it must be leaning on the curve part.

Its hard to explain...ahh!!

Thanks guys

BL,

Welcome to knife making!

I don't know what 'leaning' means. But I'll try:

If steel lays flat, on glass, then the steel isn't warped (Always check this before starting!)

If the bevels just don't match, then keep filing. Do you know the difference in making a 3" blade vs. a 5" blade? They both start with 12" of steel. It's just the 5" blade didn't have as many mistakes.

Well, its more like the "center" edge is more on one side than the other. I just looked at my small Buck 102 fixed blade and its not much better so I think I am within the leave as is range;)~

When starting out it is hard to know how much effort to put into getting it right. Just ask yourself what am I going to think when it is finished. If you are going to be unhappy go ahead and fix it now.

If the center is getting too thin for heat treating you can easily take 1/16 th inch off the edge. from the tip of the cutting edge all the way back to the reccasso. This will give you a fatter blade at the edge and you can take more off the side that needs it.

Just check the rest of the knife to make sure it still looks in scale.

I have made a knife for a customer with a 3 inch blade and one with a 5 inch blade. Both are the same shape just scaled up on the photo shop program. So what I am saying is if a bit extra has to come off the blade it may have to come off every where. But it will still look like what you want if scaled.

I would suggest trying to get it right on the early knives so you can get it right on the next couple of hundred you make.

But at the end of the day do what is going to let you get what you want from making. (fun)

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been looking it over and it actually isn't so bad. The only way to tell is actually eyeball down the length of the thing. It is straight as far as the edge, just about 1/32 to one side. Looks good though........next ;)~

Lesson learned here. Get a good scribe line or dont grind!
