I don't think I would go that route if you're planning on going to a powered sharpening setup. I would look seriously at getting paper wheels, as discussed at length in the sticky. Buffing wheels tend to round off edges in my experience whereas I never had that happen with the paper wheels. I did get very good results in terms of powered sharpening by grinding my bevels on a 1x30 HF sander using a 120 (or higher) grit belt followed by polishing on a 8" slotted paper wheel with white rouge. Most softer steels I could grind the bevel using a 400 grit SiC belt. Gave me hair whittling results with minimal effort. Biggest issue was using a light touch on the paper wheels, not bearing down on it, and making sure I kept the angle consistent using the Sharpie trick of coloring the bevel. I don't usually do powered sharpening anymore unless it is on someone else's abused knife, but that's the way I would do it if I were using it regularly again.
