Hi,

Few days ago YouTube recommended me this video :
"How the amazing evolution of tool steel has created some of the finest chisels ever made"
In this video Stumpy Nubs Describes some of the western tool history in short.

I wonder where can I find more recommended sources where I can read or watch more in depth about this topic : evolution of tool steel and especially blades
I am looking for that is more like history, story and less like metallurgy course , but some technical details are OK .
Good book or video recommendation will be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Don't think you can separate the "history" from the metallurgy but the best source that I know of for comparing the characteristics of blade steel over time can be found right here on Blade Forums.

Just go to the following thread for a start, which will provide you links to other resources provided by Larrin Larrin (including his book and blog) for all the "history" you really need to know about the development of blade steels over time: I Tested The Edge Retention of 48 Steels

The video focuses mostly on the evolution of steelmaking techniques prior to modern times rather than on the evolution of modern tool steel. Any chisel you will ever get your hands on, even very old ones, would have at least used the crucible steelmaking technique mentioned in the video unless it is a poor quality chisel. And anything made in the last 100 years would most likely be electric steelmaking. But that's just the process for making the steel not the development of different compositions and which alloying elements are chosen and for what purposes. Learning about that isn't really possible without discussing at least a little bit of metallurgy. Because adding different alloying elements is metallurgy.
