I'm curious as to how to go about learning knifemaking as an apprentice in the US.

My shop skills aren't that great (they don't have shop classes in high schools where I live) but I'm willing to put in time, effort and money to learn as much as I can. Realistically the longest I can be away from my day job is a month, but I want to learn as much as I can in that period of time.

Are there any knife makers in the US who are offering to take in apprentices?

I have been looking into the school that The American Bladesmith Society does. I have heard great things about the courses they teach. Check out the "Schools" section on their website. www.americanbladesmith.com If I can get some time off in February I may go to the Intro to Bladesmithing course.

Once in a while while we need an extra hand and take on an apprentice who learns the knife making while he helps out of the ranch. You get a place to live, meals and shop time.
Average ranch day is 6 hours, for an apprentice and you will have plenty of time in the shop.
