Learning to Draw Again

I've been trying to learn how to draw my cartoons using my pen tablet. Unfortunately, it's quite hard. It's like learning to draw all over again. I drew these three characters in about three and a half hours. Just for comparison, I could probably draw one of these in about two minutes on paper, and I can draw one of my own characters in about twenty seconds on paper. Here's the ones I got done (I didn't create these, they are some of the drawing exercises from Preston Blair's "Cartoon Animation") :

This one didn't turn out too good:

I've always wanted to try one of the graphics tablets, but could never justify the expense for what would be (for me, at least) a toy.
There are folks turning out some very fine digital art these days; I recall some of the early stuff and it was pretty poor.
However, now a great deal of digital art makes it into prestigious competitions like the annual "Spectrum" for sci-fi and fantasy art.

Looks good.

Have you tried using both hand drawing and tablet?
I know that some people will block out and draw pretty much the entire pencil image by hand, then scan it into the computer and finish the "ink and color" on the tablet.

It might save you some time.

I normally do it that way. Here's the most recent one:

But I wanted to work on them in school in between classes (I have a 5 hour break on Mondays and Wednesdays) and I don't have time to draw them out at home.
Also, I'm pretty sure the library lady would give me a dirty look if I went in there and tried to set up my lightbox, scanner, computer, drawing tablet, and was sharpening my pencil every five minutes. :p
