I've wanted to learn how to make knives for a while, but I can't afford to take a class. Should I just go for it off of the the research that I've done or is there some better way to go about it?

Read all you can.
Get your order of operations down pat.
Buy a piece of tool steel from a supplier.
Get a plan from DC knife printed out. Think simple and small.
Look up the gough jig.
Get your jig and files set up.
Look up nick wheeler hand sanding on YouTube.
Procure tools and supplies.
Execute the idea

YouTube is a decent tool, and see if you find anyone around you that can help. I was surprised a pretty well known knifemaker lived close to me.

This is mostly what I did. No filing jig though.
If you do go down the file route order a good large mill or bastard file. i'm not sure cheap files are even good for recycling.

Filling out your profile will be the place to start. Many makers will offer help and supplies if they know where you live and a bit about you. All we know right now is you are 15.

Start simple - make a small drop point hunter with a 3" blade and a 4.5" handle.

Fill out your profile and come up with a sketch and plans on how you will make the knife. Once it has been tweaked here, I will cut the profile in good steel for you and send you the blank for you to file ( I don't recommend a jig, personally). When it is ready for HT, send it to me and I will harden it and send it back with a drilled and rough shaped micarta handle blank and Corby bolts.

Again Stacy comes thru with best advice around - fill out the profile! That helps folks know a bit about you. AND Stacy has made his usual GREAT offer of much help and materials.

Not to hi-jack the threat... Allow me to say THANK YOU Stacy for all your great help keeping this forum in control.

You are 15 year old , right ? Whatever way you choice to make knife be VERY careful if you use power tool like angle grinder .Just from watching someone on you tube how he use angle grinder maybe look easy but reality is different .Power tools are very dangerous even for experienced user so please don t use them without someone with experience show you how to use them ...
