Leather and Handles

;) Good Day to All,

I have plans to partially wrap the handle of an H&B Large Camp Ax (Hawk) with leather
(specifically where it will be held).
But I'm curious as to the best way to do this and what would be the best "type" of leather to use.
Should I be using "Latigo" leather or rawhide and what weight?
I've read (in this forum) about wrapping handles with para-cord, but I'm wondering if
this would be the best method for leather? Specifically; the starting and ending of the wrap....
The general consensus seems to be to wet and stretch the leather when wrapping
(so it will shrink tight when it dries) so I understand this.
Also I notice that many custom Hawks have single piece of leather (~3" long)
sewn around the handle just under the head.
Does this have a purpose (handle protection?) or is it just for aesthetics?
Any suggesting or hints would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Kevin

I sometimes wrap my handles with sinew..I have also been known the use rawhide (get it wet and soft, poke holes in it and lace it with sinew or leather thong then let it dry in place). I really don't care for the look of paracord on a hawk...
