Hey guys...

I've been looking at the Henschel leather hats... 30-40 bucks and look like they might be durable. First off... are they any good when it comes to time? Do they fall apart? Second... will a leather hat work in the rain, or with a real sweaty head?

I'm thinking about it as a boat hat, as strange as it may sound... one of the leathers for cooler days, and one of the panama style hats for the hot hot hot ones.

Packable fabric hat: http://www.villagehatshop.com/product857.html

All that I have seen have been made in the USA which is pretty cool...

Thanks guys...
:D

I like canvas, personally. I don't know what kind of boating you're talking about, but I've read that leather doesn't do all that well if exposed to salt water and sunlight.

I've got the "Vineyard Haven" from here http://www.bayhat.com/ in the canvas. They also sell a "tan wax cloth with wool lining" version for cold weather, but I've not seen one of those. I've used mine for sailing several times, and it does a good job of keeping my noggin cool (especially if kept a little damp) or warm (if dry) and kept the spray off of my glasses.

I have been very happy with my Tilley Hat .

If you ever manage to wear it out they'll replace it. It's one tough hat and if you buy the lighter weight version they're really light.

Best hat i ever bought.

Their clothes are great too!

There are many tanning treatments for leather ,silicone might work well but cotton is far more practical. Don't buy one unless they say it's made for water and salt water would be even more demanding.I checked the Tilley site , they look interesting ,their's are made from other materials too.

I was just thinking that if a cow can stand in the rain... maybe a hat can.

Guess it doesnt work like that :D

Thanks for the assistance... has anyone purchased one of their cotton/hemp hats?

I just got a Tilley TH5 (hemp) in today's mail. It looks and feels great, thanks for the tip Point44! I'll try it out this weekend when I chase my boys-I mean hike-on Sunday. It's just in time for the hot weather, I have always worn caps and wound-up with a sunburned neck. This should be better :) .

You know, I looked at Tilley's web site, and have heard nothing but good things about their hats, but the site is so farking pretentious that I couldn't stand the thought of giving those a-holes money.

"Those who wear Tilleys usually have innate good taste, creative minds and uncommon intelligence. Everybody knows that! And the Hats serve to identify such people to each other - immediately.

Because of these exceptional yet shared traits, virtually always, especially in foreign countries, Tilley wearers greet each other.'

Maybe it's all tounge-in-cheek, but their site rubs me the wrong way.
