Leather for convex strop

I am making my own 4 sided strop for home use, and I was wondering if it is necessary to compress the leather beforehand if the strop is to be used exclusively on convex blades? I am probably going to buy a sheet from Jantz supply.

Compressing ('boning') the leather isn't to make it thinner. It helps bring the natural silicates in the leather to the surface. It's these silicates in the leather that actually are doing the polishing rather than the leather itself, but if you're going to be using this leather with a polishing compound the need to have the silicates present is lessened. Your goal of using this for a convex edge necessitates a softer surface, so having a thin leather top mounted over some sort of softer base (perhaps thin neoprene or thick cloth,) will give you the desired results. For a convex edge, personally I'd use Jantz's leather uncompressed with the rough side out! Or still better, a thick piece of suede!

Know of any good sites to buy different leathers from?

Ive seen woodcraft and Jantz, but where could I get horsehide, or suede?

I just bought a whole horse butt off the bay last week. Nice piece of leather, from a guy in New York. I'm going to make 2 or 3 new strops and try out some diamond paste.
