Can anyone tell me where I can find small pieces of leather to make a custom sheath? I looked around on ebay but many of the pieces are too large or the leather sems like it would be too flimsy for a sheath. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Off the top of my head I'd say Tandy. They have "Remenants Bag" a pound bag for $3.99. Don't know if it has pieces big enough for what you want to do.

Also you can try some of the larger craft stores. Sometimes they'll have an isle with Leather. Tandy used to sell an 8" X 12" piece of 8-9 oz tooling leather that was carried by Micheal's and it would be enough make a sheath for most fixed blades.

Ideally the best thing would be going to a local store and seeing if what they have available.

The remnant's bag I got from Tandy once upon a time had some decent sized pieces, but they were all pretty light weight stuff. . . great for pouches, but too flimsy for a knife sheath. If you're lucky enough to have a Tandy store close by, you can usually get decent size and weight pieces from their scrap bin for a good price.

Yeah, I've never bought any so I couldn't be sure. I was lucky to work in a leather shop part time for a couple years. I'd always piggy-back a major order for hides. That way I'd get part of a quantity discount and a break on shipping.

I still have about 2/3 of a 8-9 oz hide and almost a whole 2-3 oz hide. So I'm good for a couple more projects. Plus I'm still buddies with the owner, so even though we're not in brick and mortar business anymore, we still get together and order as needed.

abiggs,
Like I said check to see if there's a store nearby. Tandy's gone crazy opening stores in the past few years. Something like 100 or so nationwide. Could be one close enough to take a drive. Besides I can guarantee you'll see other stuff you realize you need.

ABiggs, drop me a line, I'll help you out. MSCantrell at gmail.com
(I'd email you, but you've got the option allowing it turned off.) :)

Go to: www.sciplus.com

They sell "cow belly" which is a very large piece of leather. some folks here say that that isn't a good enogh grade for sheaths, but I've made a metric buttload of sheaths from this stuff to excellent effect.

Especially nice at 10 bucks plus shipping.

It depends on what you're going for in your sheath. . . If you just want something functional, then belly leather is no big deal. If you want something that looks really nice then you'll have to spend a bit more on your raw materials. I don't worry too much about looks, so I'm going to have to look into that sight. Thanks for the tip Jim.
