Hi guys

I'm new to the forums but not new to the wonderful name of SOG. I'm currently looking at either a Bowie or Trident. I like the micarta handle on the trident but would really prefer the sk5 carbon steel. Anyway, i was wondering about how well the leather handle on the bowie holds up under wet conditions (rain, wet hands) besides the obvious that dropping it in a lake is bad for it. I was curious if the coating on the handle helps to prevent the leather from wearing.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for making your first post here in the SOG Forum and "Welcome!" :)

The leather handles are epoxy impregnated and are actually quite durable. If you do push the limits of the knife (in salt water, chopping, just overall aggressive situations), the handles will likely wear in proportion to the rest of the knife.

I’ve seen these knives after some pretty aggressive use (especially the SOG Bowie, since it’s been out the longest) and I’m quite pleased with the overall durability of the knife and its various materials. The handles have looked just fine after years of “field use.”

You should be fine, assuming you consider that wear will happen. The way I look at it, wear adds character. :)

Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the response. I wound up picking up a Sog Bowie today and i absolutely love it already, what a great knife! Now I have to find a good sheath that will be impervious to the elements. I assume that Eric's sheath for the Trident will also fit the Bowie. I'm also thinking about a sheath from survival sheath systems. Again, I love the knife, and thanks for the info.

Yes, by all means, get one of Eric's concealex sheaths to carry your SOG Bowie in!!...I received mine earlier today (for my SOG Trident), and I still haven't been able to take it off my belt...It is an EXCELLENT sheath, and carries the Trident perfectly. I also got the "G-clip" with my sheath (for IWB carry), and even with that fairly large knife (it IS exactly the SAME size/thickness as your SOG Bowie), it carries very well, and comfortably, IWB.
