I am a knife sharpener. A hobby. I would like to get a leather apron and would appreciate feedback

I use a leather welding apron personally, but for regular knife sharpening it's not usually necessary. More needed when doing heavy stock removal work to protect your clothes from sparks.

I would go for a cloth apron over a leather one. Lighter weight while still providing protection to clothing and they can be laundered.

Having used aprons in both careers that I have had I would always go for comfort.

I use a Duluth (and this is the exact product name, no lie) Best Damn Fire Hose Apron for working wood and steel projects. I've take a number of contacts with various chisels, saws, and blades with really no damage, so the protection is good. The only thing that makes it less ideal for working metal is the pockets, but a few strips of blue tape would take care of any metal spray gathering. I've taken some good spark baths and never come close to igniting, with no damage to the canvas too. Cloth is a lot less maintenance intensive than leather, cheaper, and way more comfortable.

I'm on the lightweight cotton train but mostly just to protect my clothes. I have worn the leather and the canvas and both are just too heavy and weigh me down.

Not sure what your intent is but I wanted to be sure you realize a sharpish knife can fly right through a piece of leather if the knife has some momentum behind it .
I have a leather apron that I made . What they call Blacksmith Leather is great for it and it comes pre finished and dyed dark brown.
I use it for running my power hand held router because the chips slide right off where as they cling to cloth .

Maybe chain mail for power sharpening knives .
I'm just saying .
