Leather/kydex combination sheaths?

I was thinking about the recent posts about not storing knives in leather sheaths, and also about the advantages kydex/concealex has in retaining the blade. That gave rise to the idea of a kydex sheath which would have a leather sheath over it, for show. I think a really beautiful knife deserves to be in leather, especially on 'dress' occasions. Does this sound like the best of both worlds to anyone?

JB,

It certainly does sound interesting. James Piorek has been doing leather covered kydex for years (and doing a superlative job). www.bladerigger.com

I've designed a "best/worst of both worlds" sheath I call the "hybrid" but I haven't found a leather worker willing to help me out with it (I'm not set up to do leather right now, but I think this idea will sell).

Hello,

I am going to do a few Leather Bodied, kydex Belt loop sheath`s in the near future.

Kind of the Best of Both Worlds for some of my customers who just have to have Dead Animal skins surrounding there knife blades.

But i am going to add some feature of my own design to the Leather sheath bodies to make up for it`s Propensity for poking Tips through the Leather,,,,, 8-)

regards,,, Allen

With properly made leather sheaths, knives never ever poke points through the leather. And remember, until a few years ago every sheath ever made was wood or leather, and served well in quite a few adverse conditions, like wars. Fact is you shouldn't leave a knife in a wet sheath, be it leather or kydex. The principle advantage of Kydex is that it serves as a spring for retaining the knife. Many good leather sheaths do that was well. There are advantages to both.

For aesthetics though, it is certainly hard to beat a fine dead animal skin. I wear them on my feet everyday.

Personally, I think there's room for both and the idea of a hybrid is very appealing for all the above reasons.

I have made a "HYBRID" sheath with a leather body and kydex to hold the knife in position. It works very well and looks good too. I used it on a fighter and wanted extra holding power but not have the rubbing noise of kydex. We are limited only by our imagination in our endevors.

Ok, I kind of want to clarify what I was thinking of originally. Basically, I was thinking of a kydex sheath, with a dressed-up leather cover that could be attached over the kydex (and, come to think of it, making that removable would be nice for situations when wetness is a bigger problem). Now, of course, I have all sorts of other things to think about.
