Well, after admiring some of the leather beaded lanyards or fobs, or whatever the proper term for them is, I decided to try and make one. While I was at a craft store with my wife, as she shopped for her scrap booking supplies and I tried not to pass out from boredom I decided to look at their leather supplies and beads. I found limited materials, so I just played around with what they had that looked useable. Not sure if I like the results. Being some what of a perfectionist I'm never 100% happy with anything I do. I'm not sure if I made this thing to long, stupid, or what. I need to find some better quality leather and beads so I can try some other styles.

So what do you think of my first silly attempt? It's attached to a large standard Sebenza.

Note: Image may load slow. Stupid Comcast.

Nice job. I like the beads.
I see these on eBay all the time.

Kinda cool and look like they pack a lot of cord in a relatively small area. I've never actually bought one though.

I think you've got the makings of a good idea and that was a good first attempt. Keep working on it and try different leathers.

Think you're on to something Wade. Looks good. You might try getting leather boot laces, at Wal Mart os elsewhere, that are dark brown or even black. I've used some of them and they turn out looking good. Another trick I've used on leather and the "hangmans knot" is to wet it before I tie it so when it drys it is hard as a rock!!

Works for me Wade, look up knots, knot tying, and macramé, you would be amazed at the things you can make.

WadeF,

I'd give you a "B"...... as it's your first attempt; probably better than mine would be! Looks a little long, for my limited taste in leather lanyard thingys!:D
But hey.....length is a personal thing!!

I was debating if I should start a new topic for this, but I guess I'll just put it here. I decided to take some of the leather lace and jazz up my Camillus Arclite. Not sure how durable this leather lace stuff is. You can get it from craft stores like Michaels. I may redo these with better leather. This stuff feels like it could rip, although I pulled pretty hard on it to get it through some of the beads and it held up.

Thoughts?

This is a good thread, I also have attempted to tie some lanyards.

I like the one CDYER posted the picture of, I can tie those (it is a crown sennit knot) but have a bit of trouble with the starting and finishing part of it. The ones for sale on e-bay seem to be tied with para cord. I have tied monkeys fists for years and like them as well. (the round ones in the pic's don posted above)

Don:

I am impressed with the pic's you posted of your work, I aspire to tie some of those kind.

Here is my favorite "fob", it's on my Queen Carved Stag Bone Mountain Man, it's leather with deer antler pieces and sinew.

While we're on the topic does anyone have a good source for leather, and what leather would you recommend? How about beads, bone, etc, to work into a fob? I really like the looks of these compared to paracord lanyards.

Look and see if there is a Hobby Lobby store near you.

Tandy Leather also carries a variety of leather lacing material and some beading. In Calgary, there are a couple of stores specializing in just beads and beading accessories - it can be a real fun treasure hunt :) Wally World, of course - but the more common stuff. They also sell some Tandy stuff, and every so often, the lacing goes on sale.

If you can find a tack shop nearby it is a good source. I have gotten some great leather from a western store that repaired and made saddles. And, again, there is always Wal Mart and their leather boot laces.
