Leather Last

I do not have to tell the folks here that leather lasts but writing some checks today, and I glanced at the date on my Check Book Leather cover. I had found I was going thru the plastic ones supplied by the bank, about 1 per year. I had done some business with a lady back in Maine, Alder Canvas, and saw she had some very simple leather check book covers. I think with postage it was still less than $15, and the date on the cover is "April 2009" so 13 years so far and still going strong. John
 
Was riding shotgun in my ranching partners truck the other day. Noticed an old dog leash that I'd made him many years ago. I asked him when I made that for him and he said over 20 years ago, it was on its fourth dog.
 
25 years ago, when I opened a "Premier" checking account, the bank gave me a leather checkbook. I still use it today (not that I write a lot of checks, anymore), and even though the inside liner is starting to look a little worn, the outside leather, still looks like new.
 
I also have an old leather dog leash, that went thru several dogs, that I still miss. Now a days I use it to do my knee exercises for my new left knee, replaced on 28 June 2021. Turned out that jumping out of airplanes for 24 years and walking cross country at night with very heavy rucksacks was not good for me. Who would have thought that? John
 
Sounds like it was even harder on the dogs. Did they have their own parachutes, or just borrow a little of yours?

Well treated leather will last a long time. I recall seeing some abandoned leather boots along the Chilkoot Trail a few years ago, cracked but still recognizable after a hundred or so winters. I treat my leather sheaths with SnowSeal and they never seem to wear.
