I just ordered some Old Hickory Knives ,A couple of 3.25 inch Paring ,a couple of 4 inch Paring and a couple of the 6 inch double edge Spearpoints.

I am wanting to make some Neck Knife Sheaths for them ,the 3.25 inch weighs less than 2 ounces ,the 4 inch weighs less than 2 1/2 ounces the 6 inch Weighs about 4 1/2 ounces
All of them 1095 Steel
I am wanting to carry them Handle Up/Point down.

I have never made a Knife Sheath but I have made a few Pistol and Revolver Holsters. I Wet Molded and Laminated the Pancake Pistol Holsters using one piece of 3-4 Ounce on the outside and 2 pieces of 3-4 Ounce glued together for the back where the Belt goes through the slots.
I use a 346 thread with about 5 lines per inch Stitching and Hand Sew them.

Some of my questions are

Will 3-4 ounce Vegetable Tanned Leather be sufficient for the weights of the knives ?

How tight do I need to have the sheath fit the Knife ?

Do the sheaths need to be Wet Molded for the Handle up/Point down carry I want ,As I want to be able to draw one handed ?

How wide do I need to make the side that will be against my Chest ?

I also plan to use Beeswax on the Outside and inside of the sheaths for Protection without dyeing the Leather ..

In addition to these Questions I would Appreciate other tips on making a Knife Sheath.

Thanks
Craig

I would use 8oz or thicker with a firm temper and a good welt. If you fall on that thing you don’t want to get poked. Good luck.

Definitly agree with Mike. 7/8 oz is the lightest leather I use for sheaths.
