Oak Leaf Brand Double Shoulders 8 to 9 oz. #9052-02
$3.99 per Sq. Ft.

18 sq. ft.

Typically if you want the good stuff, you have to buy it in larger pieces, and at a higher cost. ($5-7/sq ft)

For the "ocassional sheath maker" this is a great deal. It's a pretty decent grade leather that can be tooled and wet-formed and you won't have to break the bank to get it.

psst....don't feel bad if you miss the sale this time around...this goes on sale frequently. One of the things I like about Tandy.

Thanks for looking out Dan.

Hi Dan,
I need to buy some thin leather to cover a sword scabbard (2 to 4 oz?). Approximately how long are shoulders vs. sides and bellies? I need a strip about 6-7" wide and 34" long. Are shoulders long enough?
Thanks!!!
Geoffrey

Good heads up Dan, but what we really want to know is, did'ya take any pictures at the knife show? We wants to see big Dan, standing proudly at his display, surrounded by nubile and adoring groupies. Arrrgh, shiver me timbers. :D  :D

They often have great sales
get on the flyer or email list to get notified

our local Tandy offers loose bulk-scrap ends & pieces

they sell it @ $?/pound weighed at checkout

you can sort thru a couple of 3-4 cubic-ft bins
to find something you like
often multiple matching pieces

-usually- most bigger pieces seem to run
hand-size to double hand-size
[large enough for most khuks 18"oal & under]
but sometimes straps or long edge scrap
veg & oil tan, thick & thin
occasionally unusual pieces

they have a similar rawhide bin
which is usually longer edge castoffs
but often wide enough to find fairly even thicknesses
in a usable size

Has anyone tried Siegel of CA? They've got single shoulders for $15 ea.. Not priced per square foot. What is the story there? Any experiences with them? They came highly recommended on the makers forum.

I know some people who bought heavy leather for armor from them (SCA), and said it was a good buy. I think shipping is included with a buy of more than $75.00. I like the ads I get from them, I just don't do much leather work anymore.

Yep they said shipping was included for orders of $75 or more. For $75 I could get almost 5 times the leather from them (15/single shoulder), and no shipping. Are my calculations correct? Anyone with first hand knowledge? Are they for real?

Geoffrey, you might want to call your local Tandy store to see what they have in stock. Ordering through the website takes forever since the orders go to their HQ in Texas, then back to the store nearest you for fulfillment. Much quicker to call the local guy - and get the same deal.

Only problem with that is Geoffrey don't really have a "local guy". Closest Tandy dealer to St. Augustine is all the way up in Jacksonville, out in Jax Beach, about thirty miles up A1A. Still, I reckon in this day and age, you could call that "local".

edited to add: my "local guy" is an hour drive south in Austin, good people though, always grin when I walk in, 'cause they know I ain't leaving empty handed.

Sarge,
My "local" Tandy guy is over an hour away too, so I don't regularly shop in person. When I get a sales circular and want to order something, I call him and he ships that day. That's all I meant.:D

Thanks, Guys, for the advice and the heads up! The Tandy in Jax must be new because the last time I checked there wasn't a store in northeast Florida. 30 miles is no big deal; I drive 40 miles each way to work.

This will be fun! I haven't been to a Tandy store in decades.

Cheers!

Hold up a second Geoffrey, I did some poking around and can't come up with contact info on the guy in Jax Beach, so it's possible he ain't there anymore.
