Where do you guys get your leather to make a strop? All the leather belts I had are garbage crap leather.

Appreciate any ideas and help!

Also side note, do you want to use rough side or smooth side?

Rough side, it will take and hold a charge. Leave the smooth side, for a finishing side.

Don't you have a leather store near you? I bet you do. If not, Tandy and many others sell leather online.

Lemme know if you can't find someone, I'll send you some.

I've ordered from Lee Valley before. Lots of options there.

I used a brand new belt I broke the buckle on (stepped on in the night in bare feet!).

The belt was a very good quality leather. I charge it with harbor freight aluminum oxide polishing compound.

The compound actually made for knife sharpening will be even better.

I have a 4 sided strop, and find I only use the smooth sides. I find that the places that sell the nice strops also only glue them smooth side out for the most part. If it works for them (not to mention me.......), there must be something to it.

I am due to make my self a better one. I have leather from Tandy Factory, because I make sheaths out of leather.

My local Hobby Lobby has bags of scrap pieces (some big pieces) for a few bucks.

i cut up a old leather tri fold wallet that was sittn at a friends house until i asked for it got 2 nice sized pieces out of it, i havent done much else with them tho

I usually order the veggie-tanned craftsman tooling sides from Tandy when they're on sale. It's a great material to have kicking around.

I get my leather from Tandy or Wicket and Craig. Tandy should have a box of scraps you can dig through. I think they sell them by the pound.

Otherwise I've got a bunch of these pocket strops to sell.

check woodworking stores in your area, too -- woodcraft & rockler are fairly common.
