I just picked up an Alpha 279 and I'd like to buy a leather sheath for it. I've gone to the Buck web site and found the sheath for the Alpha 276. Would that work for mine?

OK, I've got one coming from Buck.
Here's a lousy picture of the knife, I'll take my own when it gets here.

Plumberdv, nice knife. I have two 279s (one without box is my EDC) and one 277 with a BOS blade. I like the looks and feel of the Folding Alpha Hunter.

+1 on that. I have a 277 that is in my top 5 favorite knives. It is smoother than a Benchmade and as solid as you will find anywhere.

Well, we'll see. I'm not sure that I'll like it after I get it. I'm partial to the older style Bucks.

Does anyone recognise the wood handle on this one?

My 277 has wood scales (they look more red) but my 279s have the standard rubber scales. I would like to make wooden scales and change out the scales on one of them. The 277 comes with a brown leather sheath and the 279 comes with the black nylon one. The advantage with the nylon sheath is that it can be carried both ways. I prefer the horizontal carry.

The leather sheath can be carried both ways as well.

The original rosewood scales on my (used) 277 came all scratched up as in pocket carry along side other items. It was nothing to pull them off, steel wool (0000) all the scratches out and a few coats of tru oil. But in the mean time, I picked up a set of the rubber handles, like Dave used on his rubber bucky 110, and installed them on my 277. That rubber handle kit came with a wrench and new screws that already had a tip of blue lock-tite on them.

I didn't use those screws, but did blue lock-tite the original screws when I put them back on with the rubber grips.

The rosie grips, I even tru-oiled the back sides of them. I do get carried away...lol but, it doesn't look like it would not be a huge chore to custom make your own grips for the alphas.

Anywho....think blue locktite anytime you reinstall any of those tiny screws. Even on the Buck/Mayo series of knives. I lost one screw out of my 174 clip before blue.

I got the knife a while back and although it's not really my style, I like it because of the wood. The leather sheath came from Buck today and I like it alot better than the soft one that came with the knife. I'll try carrying it and see how I like it, vertical or sideways.
