Hi all, recently I have been making some pouch style sheaths. I am having trouble with a couple chisel ground utility knives. They really just wanna go right through the side of the leather when I put them in the sheath. My first thought was to line the inside of the sheath with some wear tape (adhesive backed uhmw). After cutting throguh one sheath and almost through the second attempt .. I thought id consult the experts!
TIA

Some information will help immensely.

What thickness of leather are you using? What part of the hide?

How thick is your welting?

If you can post a picture of your sheath and knife?

A plastic liner might be the answer. Roselli uses them in their leather sheaths. Not sure how you'd make one, though.

I am using 10oz tooling leather from Wicket & Craig. The welt is also this same material. Here is a little pic of the knife in question1421613_476332099146889_452325482_n.jpg20130720_091044_zps12af8d74.jpg

This is the only pic of the sheath i have. this was before i stitched it up. I pressed the knife in the first time and blade steered towards one side and right through the back side of sheath. I thought maybe the knife was too snug so the second sheath I made to fit more loose. I have not glued up the welt yet and was merely trial fitting the knife and..it just wants to steer right into the leather.

I want to see what some others think here, but 10 oz leather would take a rather hard push to get through. You may be a little tight on the fit still, the blade, especially that profile, will catch the welt and steer off center. This happens on knives with a lowered point, and those with a high point. It either catches on the upper or on the welt, either way its going to either steer off or get caught.

Pushing through 10 ounce, I tried it with my razor sharp leather knife and its not an easy task.

It may be your "Loveless Cam", I see the bump in there that the blade edge would grab nearly every time, you may have to go with a deep pouch with a straight welt. That would reduce what the blade is biting into.

Thank you guys for the input! I did reduce the loveless cam as well as line the inside of the sheath with some .015 thick g10 for added protection. They show through between the leather and welt on the edges and kinda go with the g10 liners on the knife as well. A little more work than I anticipated but hey, it should add some protection for sure.
