Leather Sheath Idea for Leatherman Tool

I use my Leatherman well fishing to remove hooks from the fish.

When I was out fishing yesterday I was thinking how great it would be to have a sheath made that would allow me to put the Leatherman ST200 back in the sheath folded back up or unfolded so it would be ready to grab and use on the next fish without having to unfold it again.

Has anyone ever had a sheath like this made for there Leatherman Tool?

Would any custom leather sheath makers be interested in helping me design a leather sheath like this?

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks,

i would think it would be quit a trick as the size and shape are so different when opened and closed. I don't know, but that is an interesting idea. I would like to see if it is possible.

Hi pahl,

I understand where you're coming from on this and also need to open my Leatherman single-handed or leave it unfolded, however...

I have just bought a second hand original Supertool. It butterflies perfectly single-handed so I doubt I would have use for such a sheath. I imagine it would have to be quite large to hold both deployed handles too. Interesting idea though.

Suggestion - How about attaching a lanyard/paracord/bungee to the split-ring ? Now you could put one of the ST200's unfolded handles into your existing sheath. i.e. one handle in, one handle out. The lanyard would prevent accidental loss too - pretty important if you don't want to lose your new ST200 in 3 feet of murky, fast moving current ;)

Just a thought.

Now, how can I make my Wave butterfly ????

I had also thought of that. The problem with that is the pliers would be pointing up. Not very safe or comforable.

I can open the ST200 one handed with some help from my leg. When I take it out of the sheath I can spread the handles apart anough with one hand and then well hanging on to one of the handles I can push the other handle against my leg and open it the rest of the way.
Can also close it one handed this way.

Yes, size maybe a problem.

Another thought would be to buy a regular needlenose pliers sheath at the hardware store and just use that for the ST200 well fishing.

Or have a custom one made to fit the ST200 with it open.
Going this rout the sheath would only be used with the tool well fishing.

If I could come up with a sheath that was some what compact and could hold the tool well it was closed or open the sheath could be used for daily cary. As it would even be hand at times well working to have a sheath the would let me put the tool back in open.

Or I could just use my back pocket

Very interesting. Thanks for the link. It's giving me some idea's :)

How pahl, Reeline Company makes just the sheath you are looking for. They are hard as hell to find though. The one I have is reaaly worn out and I'd love to find a replacement. It comes with either a clip or a belt loop. Front part has to pockets, one fits a minimag and the other will take the folded Leatherman. Behind the front pockets is a full size opening, no flap, that fits the open tool perfectly. The pouch is often used by EMTs who keep their shears in the back pocket. I picked my up in a bait and tackle shop years ago and as I seen it has seen better days. I like it because I can carry a Minimag and a Wave and just pop it off and put it in the tray when I go through security at work. If you have any luck finding them, please let me know.

Maybe something open ended at the bottom with enough leather to grab the pivot points while letting the plier push through?

Or there is an Emerson sheath that utilizes the wave feature on opening and allows the open knife to be returned to the sheath. There's a video of it on their site.

Is this the one?

mnblade, yeah that's the one,top row third from left! I found their website a year or two ago and requested got a catalog in the mail. The problem was (and apparently still is), they don't give you any information on how to order their products. No indication that I could find that they sell directly to the public and no inofrmation on how to find retailers. Maybe I'm missing something but I sure don't see it.

Perhaps you can get one made like the sebenza sheath, the flap can be closed at two diferent lengths to hold either the large or small sebie.

I had a very nice black leather one made by my sheathmaker, for carry on my duty belt. Problem is, with all the gear on belt, and where and how it has to fit on the belt, I couldn't keep the snap on the holding/cover flap closed. sitting down in car seat unsnaps the snap.I almost lost the Leatherman several times, going to have to use some other type of retainer on cover flap, or go to those good looking cases posted before this post.

just a thought -- you could have a regular sheath (closed) made and then attach a loop of stiff leather or metal to the outside where you could stick the open tool. I'm thinking it would look like the wire hammer holders on carpenter's tool belts
