I have been looking for a new source for leather sheaths. So who do you feel is the best out there and why? The next question is who do you feel provides the best bang for the buck. Please post the persons contact info as well. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Tom Carey

Gotta be Gary Graley at G2 Leather. I've seen some of his work and its top drawer!

Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!

Are you talking about a small number of custom sheaths or a larger quantity? John Freeman in Ontario is a custom knifemaker who also makes very nice, tough leather sheaths to order at very good prices, particularly with the exchange rate. He made one for my CS Trailmaster that I've been very satisfied with through a couple of years of heavy use, but he doesn't do large volume, at least he didn't a year or so ago. If you like, I'll find his site and post his link, but he's easily found as Freeman Knives or thru the Canadian Knifemakers Guild.

I can give you the adress of a leather smith called Niels Qvist...But he lives in Denmark.
Despite the distance, I can guarantee you that you will be very hard pressed to find better work anywhere. His specialties include south-american indian patterns, celtic knotwork and Viking patterns. He also does a mean oakleaf and will also make some very good plain stuff. All leather is vegetable tanned or oak tanned, not chrome tanned. Every last stitch is done by hand using a waxed synthetic thread that won't rot. He also makes belts and there is a 10 year warranty on all his stuff...
The only thing not covered by the warranty on the belts is the size

In all honesty you need to see his work to fully appreciate it. I will see if I can get some pictures up so you people can see it.
You will like it, I guarantee it

End of rant...

Thanks for the great info. To answer HJk's question I am looking for sheaths for a few of my own knives and anything I pick up here and there that I feel needs a leather sheath. I generally have anywhere from 1-5 done at a time.

Carnifex,

I am interested in contact info for the person you have mentioned. Do you have any scans of his work?

Regards,

Tom Carey

Well, since the chap in question is my dad

Contacting him is not a problem. Scans of his work will take a bit of time, but I'll see what I can do. Email me with your email adress and I'll send them to you as soon as possible.

Gary Graley gets my vote as well. He is getting my Sebenza in a couple weeks to make a horizontal draw sheath for it.

DEFINITELY top quality stuff. As for prices, I think my sheath with tooling on the front of it...is going to run about $50 or so. A bargain for what you get, IMO.
