Ive heard a lot of talk about leather sheaths damaging knives over time because of some of the chemicals that leach out of the leather. How true is this? is this true for all leather sheaths? thanks for any info.

Hi...

This is true for some leather sheaths,, however not for all...

Most of the custom leather Jockies here would use Veggie tanned leather...

Chromium tanned leather is one of those that will impart chemicals onto the knife...

I'm sure some leather guys will be Chiming in here anytime..

Leather sheaths can damage your knives over time, and in extreme conditions. But I have knives that have been in sheath for years without a problem and some that have gone thru extreme conditions without a problem.. Then again, they weren't stored wet or damaged and the extreme uses weren't for long. (But my trailmaster pitted overnight)
But if you can find a super sheath maker who uses space age materials, you can't go wrong. Although he's too modest to say so, Normark is one of the best.

Hey Guys...

HJK..

Thanks so much..
I appreciate that.. :)

Also you may want to keep in mind that not only ,not all leather is created equal,, not all leather is from Cows...

When knives/sheaths come from overseas,, I'd bet some of it Ain't from cows...

I have at least one Kuk, that I'm sure is from a Frigging goat.. LOL

Who know what the hell they use to tan leather over there!!

Gag....

LOL
