This one is for you leather benders or anyone who has done something similar before.

If I want to add a simple symbol or pic to a leather sheath how do I do that? I'm thinking of some simple runes.

Do I carve into it? Do I brand it on?

Here is the AWESOME sheath I received a while back from Chuddy Bear for my FFBM

Thanks in advanced for any help. ;)

I'm very much an amatuer sheath maker, but, I believe that tooling and stamping are done before the sheath is assembled, dyed and waxed. (I have had best results when stamping wet leather)

All the methods you mentioned would work... but for a finished sheath I think that maybe branding would be the way to go.

Probably worth trying it on some scrap leather and get a feel for how the leather behaves.... would be a shame to mess up that sheath... it's a beauty.

Without some practice, you'll definitely "ruin" that piece. ;)

I've never tried it, but I've got the tools. I don't think it would be easy to tool AFTER it's made. You'd have to put some sort of insert (like a blade - HA!) into it so it only tools hte frontside. . . and deep enuf.

Good luck. It's something I've wanted to try but it's 4987th on the list of things to do and I'm up to about #5.

Wel I was thinking of one or two simple runes. For instance, the letter T in the futhark looks like an arrow. Really simple. But, yeah, I do not want to ruin a work of art.

Draw the design you want to add and post the pic then the sheath makers can tell you how best to go about it.If the leather is still in its natural state on the inside then it would be possible to wet it from the inside ,I have an vibrating engraver with a small polished round tip that allows you to draw on wet leather just like using a pen.

Tyrkon, you should ask ChuddyBear because you will at least need to know if there is a sealer that needs to be removed before you add any tooling to your sheath. Sealed leather will not soak up the kind of moisture you need in the leather's fibers to cut and/or emboss it well.

Tyrkon,

The sheath has been sealed inside and out. As far as any kind of carving, it would be pretty difficult to do it on a finished sheath. Work like that is done before assembly. I imagine it could be done once together, although I have never tried it.

That being said, If you wanted to strip it and paint it, that would be much easier. Tandy sells lots of paint colors to work with.

To strip the finish off of the front piece just use denatured alcohol, a small can only costs a few bucks. Just wet a rag with it and wipe the piece you want to strip, do this a few times and let it dry, you will see the sheen come off and you will be good to go. You will want to re-seal it once you have the color on.

I havent done much painting on leather. I would ask Dwayne which products are best. He has done some killer artwork on leather.

Strip it? :eek::eek:

Lawd No! I absolutely love the color and the way you made this thing it feels bomb proof.

I just thought there was an easy way to add a couple markings. But I absolutely do not want to do anything that comprimises the awesome work you have done on this.

So it sounds like I'll skip on the marking idea as it is to nice to mess up. Thanks for all the input guys. :)

Maybe you'll have to sell that one and commission another just like it with the Runes incorporated.

Good info here guys
