leather sheath supplies?

Nothing wrong with Tandy, but be careful when buying from the bargain bin. Talk with the manager they are very very helpful. My first time in there he spent well over an hour maybe close to 2 hours going over everything with me. Hit up the Sheaths & Such forum. Mr. Long and Mr. Puckett are always on there helping out, they are great guys with worlds of experience.

thx for the advice. the closest tandy shop from is about 150 miles. so im restricted to internet ordering. I will check out the forums tho. I barely know how to make a leather sheath and I want to tool some deer on there so a lot to learn.

Hey man, I think I'm farther from Louisville than you but I just got their catalog in the old fashioned mail, ordered it for free online though. Even if you don't order from them there is good info and a good look at some tools and items needed in it. There are a couple places in Lexington that sell leather supplies but I didn't bookmark them or they didn't have websites. There have to be some tack shops close to one of us, we do live in horse country.

lol I hadn't thought of tac shops. the amish have several near me. I may see If they got some decent leather. I think I read somewhere to be careful of tac leather tho. I know some of the saddles they make are beautiful and hold up very well tho.

As far as what kind of leather... You need vegetable tanned, not chromium. If you have a piece and don't know which it is... Vegetable is usually light brown/tan. I believe you can find black as well. If you take a scrap and burn it, I believe the ashes can tell you which you have. If they are green, it's chromium tanned.

I know Liberty isn't exactly close to Lexington, but if you ever get up around there, there's a place on Southland Drive called Last Genuine Leather Company. I was just there this weekend and they have pretty much everything you'll need to get started and they're very friendly and helpful.

Definitely get Paul Long's DVDs. He lists all the tools he most commonly uses and the finishing products that he uses. You will save the price of the DVDs just from not buying stuff you really don't need. The only thing missing in his videos is the hand stitching, as he uses a machine.

For stitching you can get the "Speedy Stitcher" at Tandy, and many other places. If on a budget, HF sells a knock-off. I have both and like both.

Paul Long's videos are well worth the price. Wicket and Craig is a quality operation that will split your leather for you at no extra cost. They dye it too! I bought a lot of leather tools on eBay. Often you will find a whole set of leather tools for the cost of a new basic set.

Thanks for the local info, I always prefer to spend my money locally then just send it into the great electronic unknown. Now my trips to Lexington can include Woodcraft, Grainger Supply, and now Last Genuine Leather Company. If Mr. Bruno would open a kiosk in the mall, I would save a lot in shipping.

ADL, American Leather Direct, located in Morgan Town KY. Phone# 1-800-624-7642. I bought 6 sides of leather from them two years ago at the Sheridan WY leather trade show. Good leather at a good price. Nice folks to deal with, and it's in Kentucky.

Tandy Leather Factory
Zack White Leather Company: now a part of Tandy (I think)
Weaver Leather: Wholesale Leather Supplies
Campbell Bosworth: Leather supplies & machinery, A source for Barbours 5 cord right hand twist linen thread for hand sewing leather.
Springfield Leather Company, Inc.: Tools, Supplies, Exotic Leathers, & Herman Oak Leather

I've not had a chance to try any of it yet, but both of the leather shops here locally won't use anything but Herman Oak Leather. I think it is a little bit more expensive but I'm hearing the quality is unmatched.

Chris

I buy the Herman oak from Tandy. I have some of the cheaper stuff for welts or hidden areas.

If you have a tax number Zack White has wholesale prices cheaper than whats listed on the website. Some of the others might too, call them.
