I am just starting out making sheaths for my knives... once i wet the leather to mold it to the knife what is the best way to hold down all the contours from the blade to the handle without marking the leather??
thanks
Jimmy

Jim, the leather should be damp, not wet. Be sure your hands are *very* clean. Just
mold the leather to the blade and handle. You need to purchase the book "How to make knives" by Barney and Loveless.

Learned the hard way.I use about a 4 inch clamp its shaped like an A.Left some terrible marks until I put a piece of scrap leather between the sheath and the clamp. That worked pretty good.
Try brushing on acetone very libraly,on the areas you want to form before clamping. It evaporates very quickly and doesn't rust the knife.

I agree A.T., the directions for a pouch sheath in Loveless's book are excellent. I dip my leather in acetone(dries 10x faster than water) not soaking it, then mold the leather to the knife using clean hands being careful not to let my fingernails mark the leather. One tip if you're gonna use acetone, have a separate supply for brown dyed leather, and for black as a little of the color bleeds.

One other thing when molding the leather....
As well as keeping your hands clean, make sure your fingernails are clipped. They will leave an impression in the leather.
