I am looking for an overnight/hiking sheath knife with stacked leather handles in 5-6" blade length. Flat pommel preferred. Want it to have guard. Don't care about finger choils. Price must be below $100 (knife will be loaned and used by others). So far I like the Ontario P3 Quartermaster, my only turn off on this knife is the 440A steel, which, I can live with, but just barely.

The clearest choice I see is Ka-Bar... most in 1095. If you really wanted something nice, Fallkniven has some gorgeous sheath knives with stacked leather handles and laminated VG10 blades, but that's like twice what you want to pay. Most Ka-Bars can be had for around $60 I think.

I second the KaBar, the USMC model has the leather handles. The normal KaBars might be a bit big, but there is the 'shorty' version that has roughly a 5.5 inch blade i believe. I haven't seen one in a while so don't quote me on the exaaact size.

If you're willing to go outside your blade-length range by 1/2 an inch, the Plainsman from Marbles can easily be found for a lot less than $100.00 and its blade geometry will outcut the kabar two or three times over.

They also have their current incarnation of the Ideal--the knife that the Kabar originally was a cheap copy of--in the same blade length. ;) Not as good a geometry as the Plainsman, but still a lot more acute edge than the Kabar.

Don't take this as me ragging on Kabar--I have a few, they make solid knives, and have a great tradition, but you don't have to go much more money to get a significantly better general use knife.

I didn't want to be accused of advertising so I didn't copy any links to order from, but there are several vendors and they tend to be all over ebay. Just a thought.

Buy yourself a nice Fallkniven or Marble's blade with the stacked leather handle, and a cheapo Mora to loan. DO NOT loan good knives to idiots, which is those people who have to borrow one because they are too clueless to have their own.

I didn't mentioned it but I was also looking hard at the Marbles line. That plainsman looks very useful and so does the ideal.

There are several Bark River knives available with stacked leather handles. I've been using a Bark River Sperati Point lately (it's a bit smaller than what you're looking for) and I'm very happy with it.

Take a look at their Classic series. I think the Teddy (either the regular one or the one with a single quillon guard) would fit your criteria very well. http://www.barkriverknifetool.com/Classic Hunting/index.html

I'm not sure about the retail price, but most Barkies are around $100.

I think the Bowie Corp small bowies are excellant. Forged 52-100 steel, heavy sheaths and stunninly sharp. Classic stacked leather handles with a nicely polished pommel. You can usually pick these up for less than a 100bucks. These knives are sleepers and worth every penny. Others mentioned are excellant too. keepem sharp
