A friend put the bug in my ear to make a leather stacked handle. I rolled the idea around in my head for a while and gave it a go recently.

O1, Copper, african blackwood, maroon micarta, and aluminum spacers.

I searched all over for info on leather stacked construction and found the following:

Compress the leather, don't compress it,
oil it, don't oil it
wax it, don't wax it
Epoxy the discs, glue them, leave them bare.
Threaded tangs, peened, pinned

I handled every leather stack I could find, and looked at every picture I could, found some old ones that had fallen apart, with loose pommels and guards, shrunken dried out leather and went from there and made my decisions.

I'll quit rambling and get to the meat and potatoes.

What are some things that you would like to see in a leather stacked handle?

Spacer materials, colors, layouts....
Guard/Pommel materials, Copper, Aluminum, Nickel....
Woods, other materials for a solid center section...
Blade designs, steels....
Handle profiles, finger grooves....

What do you like/not like about them?

Love 'em or hate 'em, I'm all ears, I plan on making more and I'd like to hear what everyone thinks.

This one came out gorgeous my friend! I like the belly in the handle, looks very comfortable.

Nice job.

I love stacked leather handles. One thing I've seen lately is to use blocks of aged brown micarta in lieu of the leather. Looks very similar, but the micarta is a thousand times more durable.

Thanks Sam, it turned out pretty comfortable with that bit of swell

I saw one somewhere made out of pegboard material that looked surprisingly nice. Micarta would look great, but it might lose that warm feel. Love the avatar:thumbup:

John I believe that is my favorite knife....until you finish the next one I'm sure. It just doesn't get much more classy than leather and copper. The African Blackwood spacers flows nice with the whole design.

Thanks Tim, those antlers in the pic are from that whitetail I got when you were laughing at me.

I thought for sure you missed that. When I heard the shot I saw that 8 pt jump up and run away I thought..."dang, you suck!". I didn't know you had a 10 point laying on the ground. That was a good day.

You must think loud because I heard you laughing and yell "YOU SUCK!!!!
That was a good day and a nice little whitetail.

I have been accused of thinking loudly. Haha. Those antlers still have a nice color to them. I still think you should have got a skull mount.
