Anyone think 220 grit aluminum oxide is ok for stropping a knife? Should I go to a smaller grit? Thanks!

It'll work and can leave a finer finish than 220 grit AO on benchstone or harder surface (the leather will give a wee bit and the AO won't cut as deep), but that's very coarse for a finished edge. If it floats your boat, that's what matters. If it's too coarse or not coarse enough, it'll be easy to clean out.

Much, much smaller. I use leather with white jewelers rouge rubbed on it and that seems to work real good. Keep in mind that you're just polishing the edge, not really removing any more metal.

Just plain veg-tanned leather works great even without any sort of grit on it.
