Leather strop issue.

Hey everyone,

Been asked a question, and figured I'd ask for a little help.

If a single side of a strop has been applied a course compound and a fine compound on top of it (probably by mistake).

•Would it been much of a difference if that side would've been applied with fine compound only?

•If required, what is the best way to remove compound from a leather strop?

Thanks in advance.

I guess it depends on how much coarse compound you used. I'm not that worried about minor cross contamination and stuff, but if you applied a lot of coarse compound I guess there's a risk that they'll mix with use. For cleaning I've heard rubbing alcohol and WD-40 being recommended to get rid of compounds, but I haven't tried any of those yet. Sanding and using the spine of a knife to scrape off compound has also been recommended. I've used a steel brush (lightly!) to get rid of excess compound from the non-smooth side of leather, but it still leaves some on the strop. I'd say try the gentlest method first. Wiping it off, scraping with something that isn't sharp if the layer is thick and perhaps trying rubbing with alcohol. Note that I haven't tried most of these methods, so take it for what it is.

edit: oh, now I saw that this is a duplicate of http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1001979-Leather-strop-question where others already answered.
