Hey everyone,

Been asked a question, and figured I'd ask for a little help.

If a single side of a strop has been applied a course compound and a fine compound on top of it (probably by mistake).

-Would it been much of a difference if that side would've been applied with fine compound only?

-If required, what is the best way to remove compound from a leather strop?

Thanks in advance.

Update:

Removing and applying correctly seems be the better choice of action.
Would love to hear some more suggestions for an efficient way to remove compound without damaging the strop.

Thank you for all your help.

The courser particles of the course compound will probably ruin, or at least distort the effect of the fine compound.

I've heard a lot of people just using paper towels and some WD-40 to clean their strops, I haven't stropped enough knives to have to clean mine yet.

I bet it would be fine.

It would be a losing bet.

Mixing compounds means you have no idea what the results will be and the consistency will not be there. The layers will not stay separate, they will compress, mix, and you will get coarse and fine scratches on the edge.

Someone mentioned dry wall sandpaper in another thread. The kind that's like a screen. That would prolly work well to remove compound

Alright, guess removing and applying it correctly would be the better choice of action.

You can remove compound with lighter fluid, WD-40, hand cleaner without pumice, or any solvent that's not too harsh. DO NOT SAND A STROP UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW TO REPAIR IT.

Knifenut1013 has good advice for the compound removal.
Simple Green also works well.

Or make/buy another strop.

Just passing through.
