Heya guys,
New to the knife game and currently use just my sharpmaker with ultra fine rods to keep my edges in top shape.
Have always wanted to try to strop my knifes as everyone who does it seems to get great results. Where gan i get some leather to make my own leather block or where can i buy one ?

Cheers guys

Check out the Becker forum. They have an off topic thread on how to make your own.

You can check out Stropman. He has some quality strops at good prices. Love the one I got from him. A few passes on a good strop will make an already sharp knife scary sharp. Best of luck.

Lee Valley Tools is a good source for strops, as well as hones. Also has some useful books on sharpening knives and other cutting tools.

Flexxx makes some awesome quality strop you want to check.
Nice thick leather, and he's a great guy.
Get them at Flexxxstrops or at USA Made Blade

I would use an old leather belt, cardboard, or even newspaper to get my technique down before dropping the coin on a well made strop....that being said there are 100s of makers and each has thier own style and quality, but none will give you good results if your technique is wrong...for a good finishing strop google "stropblock" not bad for $20 bucks , it wont really bring an edge back, but if your looking just for finishing the strop block is good, I just made my own 4 sided strop block out of balsa wood , cost me all of $5.00 and honestly I like it just as well as leather. I also went to my auto parts store and got some 3,000 grit trizact sandpaper, Its has some foam backing unlike regular sandpaper that's about 2mm thick, that cost me $7.00, and it works pretty good IMO, point being it's gonna be 95% technique 5% equipment.

I´ve made several by my own - some years ago.

I used a wooden board and clued a leather piece on the board - using a vice (and another wooden board) to fixing it plainly. I have two I use with plain leather and others I run with compound.

Very easy to make your own one. I got the leather from an old leather bag my wife didn´t need anymore. (But it needs to be original leather and no synthetic as much as I´ve heard)

Mine are not so fine looking like knoefz´s, but they are working ;)

About how I use them: Before I use stones, when the blades are a little off from a great edge, I use the strop instead of stones... saves a lot of material from the blades during time. But that´s just me.

EDIT: To add what Allen R. said above: A leather belt can also be used. I actually use it when I´m "On The Road" as well as a ceramic coffee mug instead of stones. Some good working tools that are proven for a long time.

I can definitely vouch for StropMan, top notch quality and pretty cheap as well. I got the HD Compact Leather Strop as my first and it's served me well. All that's really necessary for keeping your blades maintained. Get the green and white compounds, course and fine.
