I am about to try my first leather sheath, and want to ask you guys where to get some 7-8 oz. leather suitable for knife sheaths. I don't want a whole cow, just enough for 5-6 sheaths. Cost is an issue, so any suggestions on vendors appreciated.

thanks, Rookie7 aka Phil Millam

Jantz Supply carries leather in small sizes. The last piece I bought came from Tandy leather. Or you could try looking in the phone book for a tack shop near you.

Check the first sticky post at the top of the page, there is some leather supplier information toward the bottom of the page. Hope your sheath comes out well!

Tandys and Zack Whites come to mind

Both will sell ya smaller pieces to play with...

Get 7-8oz leather to start with..

If ya need any help with the sheath then feel free to PM me...

Depending on the design of your sheath, you may need a bunch of leather for the number of sheaths you plan.

In my own case, I like to personally pick out leather from DAKOTA LEATHER here in town.
This is because of the natural chance of holes and cuts in the leather or other flaws that come with the fact that a guy had to cut it off the cow.

What I have learned is that leather is sold at a different rate depending on where it came from the cow from.

I spend about $26 for enough for about 5 or 6 sheaths

If you buy good quality shoulders range marks and such are minimal. Do not use belly skin for sheaths as it is too soft and stretches.Dave:)

ive used midcontinent leather for years......tandy if i dont have time to wait

Thank for the advice. I checked your website, and I really, really like your knives. What woods do you use? I love the grain in your hunters.

Siegal of Califoria has pretty good prices on leather. If you are just starting off and want to develop your skills, try buying some 8 to 9 oz splits. They aren't as pretty as good tooling leather but protect the knife just as well and are dirt cheap.
