Leather thickness

So I have my small list of places I order my knife & sheath materials from, and one of them has the cheapest decent quality leather I've seen. But they only have 6/7 oz, and 8/9 oz leather. I have been using the 8/9 oz but, I wanted to try something thinner. Is 6/7 going to be too thin for a sheath? I think 7/8 would be perfect but, needed opinions on the 6/7.

In my experience, I bought some of that 6/7 stuff recently, its a bit on the thin side for me. I dont like it.

I'm having a hard time with finding 7/8 as well and yes, its what I normally use for smaller fixed blades and folders.

Ok thanks. I'll just keep using the 8/9 until I find a decently priced 7/8.

Same here with having a hard time finding decent 7/8 leather. Well at least now I know everyone here has run across the same problem.

Just purchased a side of Herman Oak in 7/8 oz from the Hide House. One of the cleanest sides of HO leather I have seen ain a long time.

That would be great, but I build at a very small scale, so putting out $200+ in one shot on leather wouldn't be too feasible for me. Thats why I like TexasKnife. They have 6/7, and 8/9 oz shoulder pieces and sell by the foot. For $35 I get close to 5 square feet.

Check Springfield. They carry HO and will cut it for you. You don't have to buy the whole side.

Apparently Tandy has just begun carrying Herman Oak again! The few sides they had on hand were not up to par, but I hope it will get better with time. What they had felt like sand paper on the back and had quite a few imperfections, not what I am familiar with their product. I know them having a really nice nap on the back and super clean fronts. The price was rather extraordinary as well, but seems to be lowering as well.

I've got my hopes up as I love to pick through the stacks at The Leather Factory. :D

For a fixed blade, the heavier the better in my opinion, just feels more secure, as to leather thickness, I posted this before but with the title of your thread it may answer others looking for how to judge leather thickness

Thanks for that, Gary. Very useful conversion table for beginners (like me!) trying to dip their toes. '8 ounce' leather means bugger all to me, but I can visualise 3.2mm nicely :-)
