OK, I was just cruising by & I'll try to give this a shot... it isn't easy (for me) without drawings though...
First a little knot terminology... the "running line" is the long (rest) of your line, rope, leather etc. The "tag end" is the shorter end that you will me maneuvering around to form your knots.
Having said that, practice with a piece of parachute cord or lite rope, it will be easier to work with...and undo
Start with the running line in your left hand, tag end in the right. Fold the tag end to the right & then back to the left. It forms a flattened S. The tag end is at the top of the S and the knife will be bottom loop of the S.
Wrap the tag end around everything, back to the left. (Legend has it thaat a hangman's noose had 13 wraps)
When you get to the loop sticking out of the bundle on the left...Push the tag end thru the loop. Then pull gently on the right loop to tighten the left loop. That will hold the tag in place.
Pull on the running end to tighten the right loop. If the knife was in there it would snug it up there.
After you get the hang of making the noose (pun intended)... you can clip the running line and put that end thru the loop that is holding the tag end (from the opposite side: prettier) to hold it all in place.
I didn't mean to write a novel
This is way easier to do than to type/explain
Get a piece of line and fiddle with it. Also check out:
