Are their any advantages to kydex shealth over leather or leather over kydex. I perfer leather it lasts, takes a licken and its an old standard. I find kydex to scrach the knife.

Any comments

Hi!
I tend to use kydex/concealex for my user knives, yes they scratch the blades but i don't care as they are for user knives.
There's another thread about kydex/concealex not being good in warm (fire) areas.

In short, i don't like leather, i want kydex/concealex, i don't have to care for it, just rinse it off and dry it and it's ready.
Also i don't need any snaps and straps to keep my knife where it's supposed to be.
More ideas?!

Hey Guys....

With synthetics there are a lot of pros with only a few cons..

First the pros..

-Synthetics give you the ability to wear the knife in most an position, without straps, snaps or closures of any kind, providing Quick easy access to your blade.

- Safety. Synthetics will give you the Ultimate in safety. No more slicing your way through the side of the sheath.

-Synthetics are practical. Get it wet, No problem, get it dirty,,no problem, what to wear it in another configuration in five minutes? No problem.

- as far as scratching goes..Yupper synthetics will scratch the blade at some point. So will leather, so will nylon.

Cons

-Scratches
-Don't leave it in the sun or a hot car

If you are going to use your knives, the scratching the knife will see from snythetics will be the least of your problems. Put your knife to hard use for an hour cutting something in the field, and the scratching won't be a thought anymore...

It's all a matter of personal taste...
I have a few knives that I carry from time to time that have leather sheaths, and probably will never wear synthetics. They are not suited for it,and frankly deserve leather. For the majority of my blades, they all have synthetics. I like the security it provides, and also the flexibility as well...

If you've never owned a High Quality Custom synthetic sheath, which are a World away from factory synthetics,,you ought to give one a try. You Won't feel you've wasted your money.

Most of what I buy today are customs with concealex sheaths and the carry options are nice. One complaint I do have about concealex is that since it is molded to retain the knife, even if you work with it to loosen a little, you will need to pull against the sheath to remove the knife. I have lost two belt loops that were pulled loose from repeatedly restraining the sheath as I removed the blade. I have one or two sheaths where there is enough material projecting over the spine and towards the handle that the sheath can be pushed off the knife with the thumb while drawing it. Wish all of them were this way. For a heavy bladed knife that will never be carried inverted I do prefer leather. The knife just slides out easier when you need it and if the snap and retention strap are properly positioned they don't slow you down at all.

Ditto the advantages Eric mentioned for kydex & concealex sheaths. A couple of big cons for them (and pros for leather):
- leather tolerates heat MUCH better, so if you spend a lot of time near camp fires you may prefer leather
- leather is quiter, so if you do a lot of stalking you again may prefer leather.

About half of my sheaths are kydes or concealex, and while I love 'em, I also am mindful of their limitations. I actually carry my hunting knife in a custom leather sheath... quiet, won't deform near the camp fire, and it takes on a certain patina with each passing trip.

On the other hand, my daily carry rides in a concealex sheath with tek-lok multi-carry options. Hard to beat for it intended purpose.

If one desires the appearance of Leather, but the function of Kydex....

Kenny Rowe and Bob Schrap offer leather sheaths with kydex inserts.
