Sorry for this I know it's been asked 1000 times but I went back and did not see it. What are the various leather weights used in your sheaths? Small and Large knifes.

Normally I work with 8-9oz and 9-10oz leather for almost everything because I mostly do Machete and fixed blade sheaths. Have made a few belt pouches and holsters from the thick stuff and it's worked out okay so far. If I get more into that stuff though I'll probably buy some 6-7oz leather to try out.

I use 9-10 oz leather for fixed blades

8-9 oz for folder and small fixed sheaths

I find myself generally tempted to use leather too heavy/thick for any given use. I have to make a conscious effort to move "down" on leather.

I order a side of 8-10oz Russet skirting from Whickett and Craig and use it for most of my projects. It usually lasts me about 3 months.

I use 7/8 for everything, BUT I also line everything so the end result is more like 8/9 or 8/10 depending on the lining I choose.

I use 7/8 oz on almost every sheath I make. The way I attach my belt loops on most sheaths gives additional stiffening, strength is not an issue on this weight leather. I do not like to use the heavier weights of leather as I consider it as "over-kill" without any proven benefits. ---Sandy---

Mister over-kill, that is my name and no can take that away from me! :p

I am proud of that moniker!! :D

I'm with you on this, I love to use thick leather and heavy thread.

I am agreeing on this. I have been using 8-10 - but find myself skiving off an ounce or so to clean my leather up - this makes things easier and I can't see a difference in performance.
