Hey all,
I have inherited a French 1831 artillery sword (such as shown at http://www.arms2armor.com/Swords/fren1831.htm). The scabbard came to me old, brittle, and in in two pieces. I'd like to remake the scabbard, using the existing hardware (which can be seen at http://www.championhillrelics.com/Swords.htm, searching for "Mai 1841"). The sword itself is in about the same condition as the one shown there too -- perhaps a little more aged.
Questions:
1) I've heard leatherworking at this skill level can be done from my small house with no shop (but I do have a little workbench). Is that true, and what type of leather should I buy? Is there a guide I can use to help me with this project?
2) How should I go about restoring the blade (which has nicks and very small dents) without scratching the hell out of it?
Thanks for your help.
