I'm doing a restoration of an old L66 western boy scout knife from the 60's and I'm looking for leather sheeting to craft my own washers (double tang) and am a)not sure what type of leather to get/finish (I guess?) and b) not sure where to get it from. I realize that birch bark is more practical and durable but I want to stay true to the knifes originality. Any tips would help, thanks!

you might try this question on the knife makers section of this forum
I'm sure someone will help you out.

Check with a shoe repair shop or a saddle maker if you have one nearby. A stacked leather washer handle can be made from thick shoe sole leather and shaped on a belt sander, then stained and sealed.

Saddle Skirting scraps would be ideal, 7/8 oz. and on up to14 oz. would all be usable. Check out a few saddle makers near you if possible.

I would either go with veg tanned saddle skirting or just plain tooling leather. And to get it I would look at Tandy Leather Factory it is the best place I have found.

Jantz Supply sells "leather spacers" that are already prepunched if you would rather do that than make your own. Just another option.

Good luck!
