To all you leather-magicians out there,

I've been messing around with dying leather, and when I'm done, the pieces all REEK of the dye I'm using. Any tips for a newbie?

Here's my current process:

1. Cut/shape the leather.
2. Dye it (using alcohol-based dye)
3. Rub in Neetsfoot.
4. Done (stinky)

What am I missing? Gummi-berry juice?

Thanks for reading....

After dyeing the leather, how long do you wait before applying neetsfoot?

When I dye leather with alcohol or oil based dyes, I always wait a few days for the smell of the dye to go away before I apply the finish. It's worth a shot.

1) Hang the dyed leather up in front of a fan overnight - that will help eliminate most of the odor......
2) After that apply a light coat of Montana Pitchblend - it contains pine pitch and leaves a great outdoorsy smell
3) Finish with the top caot of your choice or just with the MPB...
