Azrael’s Custom Leather

Dave Burke (Leatherface) is a custom sheath maker out of Liberty, NC. He specializes in leather and if you ask him nicely he will do kydex for you. Actually he does kydex even if you don’t ask nicely. In the past year Dave has done a few things for me and my ever changing collection. Before going to Peru last November he sent me a new product to play with, a Nessmuk. I got one of the first ever knives from Dave. This Nessmuk was made from 01 steel and had a nice convex edge on it. Osage orange handles to round it out. This wouldn’t be my first choice or even a safe choice for the tropics, this is why it had to be used there and not just to try it, Dave said, “Use it like you’re angry at it.” Let’s just say that it outlasted some of the knives that failed while battoning or rafting. It made it out of there in better shape than some of us. Dave included a kydex sheath with a Tek-Lok attachment. Now you are probably asking yourself, why would a custom leather sheath maker send kydex with a nessmuk? It was going to the tropics, simple!

Some of my favorite blades are machetes. It’s no mystery that most of them don’t come with a sheath and the ones that do come with one….you wish they didn’t. I had a few machetes that needed some pants for hiking and stowing in the pack. I sent Dave two 12-inch machetes from Ontario and Tramontina.

Ontario 12 inch Machete

I wanted the Ontario sheath to be universal so it would work with three different handled machetes. One of them had custom micarta scales and one was a D-guard model that had the guard cut off. The last 12-inch machete had the original riveted handle. The sheath Dave made fit them fine and had a belt loop added onto it. Dave will also convex your machetes as an added service.

Tramontina 12-inch & 14-inch

Dave made me two sheaths for the 12-inch. One was a regular belt sheath and the other was just a plain sheath for transport or stuffing into a pack, no belt loop.

The 14-inch bolo is by far one of the best machetes by Tramontina. This is an interesting design. I had another sheathmaker turn me down when it came to this one. Dave did a really nice job with this one.

Great pics, thanks for the info about Azrael's Leather. I appreciate the pics of the backs of the sheaths as well, it's nice to compare how the different makers attach their belt loops.

Dave does nice work. I have a few of his kydex sheaths. I especially like the one he did for your Tramontina bolo machete.

those are some great looking sheaths... i don't have any of dave's work.. i migt need to look him up...

Very nice leather work and I like the kydex to. Seeing the knives are the greatest

I thought the Bolo might be somewhat of an, experiment for Dave. He pulled it off great. I have not seen any real kydex sheaths for the greatest Tramontina, the 14-inch Bolo. The machete convex is more of a service, I think one of his partners does it and does it incredibly well. I really felt that I sent him a machete and got back a chopping machine with the ontarios.

Does anyone know if Leatherface is still making kydex sheath for Tramonina Bolos?

Reuben,
I got all the way to your last posting, before I figured out the post was almost 9 years old! Do you still have that Nessmuk? John

BD, I had just read your article in the Spring 2017 "Survivor's Edge" with the photo of the Peruvian soldier, so just read along thinking it was a new posting till I saw you comment and went back to the beginning and saw the date, My Bad! John

That's funny John, I too have been fooled by the older posts that get bumped up.
