I was in Costco and they are selling a 25 year anniversary combo set, a Leatherman multitool and a a folder with 420HC steel. The set is made in Taiwan with a 25 year warranty. Are they as good as the made in US model? How do I know which is made in where?

Thanks

On matters of where it's made.

Look at it this way.
Taiwan has been producing knives for some time now.
And hardly anyone manufactures the old fashion way of utilizing skilled labour using hands and sight.
Automation and CNC machinary has nailed down the main issues pertaining to flawed workmanship.
If the OEMed product is milled according to an ordered specification, than there is little to fear in terms of material weakness or faults. Especially so if it's covered by a 25 year warranty by a company like Leatherman.
The one main matter of which many may have difficulty to overcome is off shore production prejudice.
There isn't a single manufactured thing on earth which hasn't been touched by the economics of globalization.
We are after all of one planet .

I'm betting pretty heavy the set isn't made in Taiwan. If it is they'll be some very interested Leatherman company representatives that would want to see it.

As far as I know and have been able to find none of the Leatherman tools or knives are produced overseas. Certain parts are imported from other nations and finished in Oregon (plier heads, files and some other parts) but I'm fairly certain only the accessories (bits and bit kits) and sheaths are made in Taiwan or China.

How do I know which is made in where?

If it's a Leatherman tools or knife it is "made" in Oregon, in the USA. Country of origin isn't put onto the packaging anymore due to a massive lawsuit filed against the company in the early 2000s but they're still overwhelmingly produced here.

Worst comes to worst, call the company and ask them. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to clear things up. :)

Hi Bill,

I just got my Costco set today. It didn't have any packaging materials with it.

The only reference that I can find to Taiwan is on the black plastic bit driver holder. Is this why you think the tools are made in Taiwan or was there something on the packaging?

Thanks - Joe
