Does anyone know what is going on with the By The Numbers range of tools? I like the look of the #4, but don't really want to pay full retail plus shipping by ordering it direct from Leatherman.

But, they don't seem to be available anywhere else. I thought maybe they just haven't reached dealers yet, but there are reviews dating back almost a year.

So what's happening? Is this some new business model by Leatherman, where they will only make the tools available for direct purchase?

Sadly the #4 is not currently available on their website. I have never seen them sold anywhere, but Leathermans website and I remember when they cam out. They did not come out like a normal Leatherman tool with buildup and showing them at shot shot or whatever. They just appeared on day on their website. It was around the same time they did the Croc which was another one piece tool that came out of nowhere. It was also in the same time frame when they acquired Pocket Tool X which is a one piece tool company. I assume the numbers line was just them testing some manufacturing methods and demand of one piece tools. I could be completely wrong, but that's just how I see it.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to contact them directly to find out whether they will be more available in future.

if they were only planning to make them available via their website, kind of strange that they didn't state that.

So, I am assuming leatherman is the way to go when going for a good utility?
I was just looking at a few utility knives, haven't really had the chance to purchase one yet,
I've been in the habit of picking up the cheap ones.

What do you mean by utility knives? Do you mean multitools? If so you have a few options for good quality. I can help point you in the right direction if you tell me a general purpose of use for it or what tools you want it to have. You also might just want one to cover your basis without a specific need in mind. If so I would be happy to help.

By all means, start a new topic with what your uses/needs/budget are and you'll get a heap of recommendations. There are a mass of info in the other threads as well. I would suggest that instead of commenting on really old threads, just read them and then ask questions about what you've read in your own thread. It will help you keep track of what you want to know.
