Hi everyone! I'm rather new to knives and stuff so i need some advice.. Recently I saw some Leatherman folders and they look and feel pretty good. Was thinking of buying one of em as a camp knife.. Do any of you here own leatherman knives? any thoughts?

This is purely my opinion:

If Leatherman knives are like Leatherman multi-tools, I recommend staying away from them. That said, I've not handled their knives, but I have their tools and, IMO, their tools rank at the bottom of my list in QC.

So, my problem is QC and consistency...not design. I actually like the designs of Leatherman.

Best of luck.
:)

Steer clear of Leatherman knives with 420 blades. The 154cm blades are ok and quite sharp out of the box. I tried one for a little while and really hated the blade launcher feature. The blade opened too easily and I just didn't feel coinfident having it in my pocket.

I don't like the 420 versions and I have no experience with the blade launcher versions...but I have 1 and 1/2 years experience with the K502X version and it is a very good heavy duty workhorse. I have well over 200 knives of all types in my collection, but the 154 cm of the K502x is my major work knife. And I am not easy on knives, my work requires heavy use of them.

I thought I could ask it in this thread. I know that the blades in the charge-series are made of 154CM, but how about the others? Especially the Wave and New Wave. They are some sort of stainless, 440 maybe? Can't find it anywhere...

I had one Leatherman. Not again. If you want a good knife that has established itself look at a Kershaw, Spyderco Delica or endura. Much better knives and well designed

I think leatherman makes some of the best multi tools around, and that seems to be the consensus on bladeforums as well.
I have heard favourable reviews on their folders as well.

I have a collection of leathermans and the older models were much better than the hand pinching waves surges and charge! The knives whether 420 or 154cm are good for their asking prices.

I just purchased a new Charge. This one has the aluminum handles and I'm excited about using it. I've been in the market for a good multi-tool and I figured it would have to be a leatherman since they pretty much started the craze. I'm from the school of thought that you should go with the expert in the market/field. Spyderco for serrations, buck for price/quality, etc...I'll post comments when I've used the Charge for a while.

had my leatherman charge,,,once i recieved my vic spirit i competely forgot about the charge,,,i never really liked the leatherman,,,,

I like Leatherman’s multitools very much and I use them all the time, but their folding knives just didn’t cut it for me; they didn’t fit my hand (felt too short, too thick and too heavy) nor did they nestle into my pocket comfortably as they should when clipped. The carabiner was kind of nice, but blade launcher worked only marginally and I wasn’t much impressed with their liner locks and 420 blade steel.

Get yourself a Spyderco instead...maybe a Waved Endura or Delica, D' Allara Drop point or one of the rust proof Salt series.

I liek ym leatherman Wave but I didnt like the leatherman knife...I had a 420 version and although it was pretty sharp I didn't like the BULKY design...it wasn't worth it to carry an extra screwdriver tip or 2...know what I mean...Plsu I know if I were to use the thing all the time I would spend my nights touchign it up...So I traded it...All in all it just wasn't for me...

I haven't played with any of their new knives, but I like the look of the large hunter folders, like the Nehalem specifically. You can see them all here http://www.leatherman.com/products/knives/ and use the Knife Comparison feature to see which one has the characteristics you'd like.

I've gone through a few of their multi-tools, and liked them all, but now I'm down to a Swisstool Spirit, which replaced my Leatherman Blast -- also a fine multi-tool, but not as smooth an operator as the Spirit. And I do have a Leatherman Juice xe6, which is very nice for its size.

I have a number of multi-tools, a lock blade 302 folder and a Ukia fixed blade, all by leatherman. The fixed blade seems "tinny" for lack of an educated word. There's a little play between the blade, or gut hook or saw and the handle. One of the most unique (strange?) fixed blades I've ever dealt with. When I try to contact leatherman about concerns they simply do not respond. For this reason the product may have been good at one time but sorry leatherman, you now suck!

love the multi-tools, hate the knives, at least the ones i have held

i'd much rather have a Spyderco Delica and a SAK or other multi-tool

started out with standard leatherman, went to the supertool then the supertool 200, now the core. I loved them all, great tools!
Also have a swis tool, but not as good as the Leatherman tools.

I have never owned a Leatherman, just tried some of the generic Chinese-made junk multi-tools just to see if I liked the concept before investing serious money in the high quality multi-tools. Personally, I much prefer my Victorinox swiss army knives. They are compact, super quality, and Victorinox offers so many different combinations of tools that you are sure to find one that fits your needs. I have used these knives for years, and they usually do most of the little stuff that you don't want to have to walk to the tool box for. If my Victorinox can't handle the job, chances are a Leatherman style multi-tool wouldn't either, and I "go to the toolbox". But if you are a gizmo/gadget addict with money to burn, hey, I say pop for it, the more toys the better, right? : )
