I recently purchased the Leatherman 302, stainless steel handled knife, NIB for 16 bucks...it has the 420HC blade, which i believe is what buck knives are for the most part...How do leatherman knives rate in general?

Well it was actually 12 bucks but with shipping it was 16....still i figure for EDC it will serve its purpose..

Well yeah, for most of us a $10 SAK would probably do everything we need. I still enjoy being excessive and carry a $200 knife.

The knife on my Leatherman Skeletool is surprisingly good. 154cm steel and the liner lock is very solid with absolutely no play or lock up problems/stickiness. My Emerson knives can't say the same.

Multitools, great... as long as you don't expect the blades to hold an edge. As far as the 'knives' go, I'd give them a pass.

The blade of my Leatherman Charge is 154 CM and it keeps a great edge even with rough work. I strip alot of copper wires with it, when I forget my klein stripper. It is not much affected by copper. I have 2 Leatherman knives, and they are ok, not sure what steel it is. You did fine with $16. You could have done alot worse. Keep it sharp, and enjoy using it. With every cut, the $/cut rate goes down.:D

I like my Leatherman knife, it is the K500X with a 154CM blade. It is discontinued now, but leatherman still makes a few nice blades. It is a very comfortable knife, and with a 3" blade, it can tackle just about anything a folder should be capable of taking. Here's mine:

I was surprised how good steels leatherman actually uses in their folders.
They however run atleast triple prices for the multitools here, wich is a turnoff.. propably same with their folders.

It's worth $16. For more money, there are better choices. Leatherman has a good brand image with the general public, but not knife afficianados.

I bought a Klamath right after they came out and am generally pleased with it. Originally the going rate was over $125 which was way too high. Their hunting knives have since settled down to the $50-100 range and are decent values for that price category. They are better than some, and not as good as others. The steels are good, the features are good, ergo's are good, the fit and finish is so-so.

I could go into more depth, but that's the Reader's Digest version.

Now this is NOT considering Tim Leatherman's politics - we're just talking knives here....
