Leatherman Rust

Got my son (Marine) a Black Leatherman Super Tool 300 last year for Christmas. He's stationed in Okinawa Japan and is telling me the Leatherman is rusting. I know he's oiled it, but what's a Marine to do? Not sure how to help him deal with the rust without removing the coating. I'm sure a Sandaflex pad would remove the coating. Not sure what Flintz would do to it. Any ideas?

The only thing that I can think of that should help is spraying the tool occasionally with a good rust preventative type of oil such as Birchwood Casey's "Baracade." This oil isn't that great as a moving part oil but is great at preventing rust.

I kept a wave in my workshop for general use and it got pretty rusty too. I think its just the nature of whatever steel they use, which is too bad. Ive been wiping mine with mineral oil regularly now to prevent it. The only multitool I have that has never got a spec of rust is the swisstool line. They are high polished for a reason, no little crevices for rust to ever take hold in. I should do a high polish on my wave and see if that helps, I never thought of it at the time.

I have an old Black Leatherman PST from the 80's and it has rust in the joints. It is just surface rust in my case. I use a Q-Tip and rub my favorite oil in all the joints. I'm pretty sure the steel is a high carbon with the black oxide finish so the finish will eventually wear off in spots leaving it vulnerable to rust. It is probably exacerbated , in your sons case, by the moist weather over there. I think all he can do is keep it oiled until he comes home and hopefully it will be less prone to rusting in a better environment. A big OOHRAH to your son, from one to another.

My black oxide MUT rusts all over. I assume it's the coating because it's my only Leatherman that's black and only one which has rusted like that. Haven't found a solution, but it really hasn't been a problem, either.
