Leatherman Sharpening Woes

I just can't get the blade on my Wave or PSTs as sharp as I can get other knives. I can get my SAKs, my old Bucklite, and my kitchen knives shaving sharp, but I just can't seem to get a decent edge my leathermans (OK--To be honest I can sorta scrape hair off my arm with the Wave, but it's nowhere near as sharp as I can get my other knives). Is it me or is it Leatherman?

I'm able to get a shaving edge quite quickly with the sharpmaker 204.
what are you using? I've also used a lansky when it was really dull with good results.I believe its a really soft steel in the leatherman wave so you should be able to sharpen to a shaving edge without to much trouble.

Mate, the steel in all Leatherman tools is a good tool grade.
It is NOT a good knife grade steel. Nor should it be. I use
my supertool knife for all the stuff I don't want to use a good
blade on. I sharpen it to a "working" edge for real gritty work.

If you want a razor edge handy carry a razor or a relly good blade.
Leave the grunt work for the leatherman.....

My last attempt was with a set of Razor Edge Systems hones and their small guide. That got it hair scraping sharp. My previous attempts have been freehand. Perhaps the combinations of steel, hardness and edge geometry on my other knives are more forgiving than those of my Leathermans.

Tightwad's got a point. I think I've got a "good working edge" on the Wave, and now I've got a decent folder so the Wave's blade doesn't see much duty anyway.

I think I'm going to spring for an EdgePro Apex. If I do, I might play with the Leathermans some more.

I sharpen my leatherman wave with the razor edge guide and there hones and can get it so it will shave the hair on my arms without scraping the skin.

I also use my razor edge guides with my dmt hones.

My Leatherman SuperTool doesn't hold a decent edge, either. In fact, a shaving sharp edge will dull while cutting a hot dog stick. Leave the bevels steep and use 'em for scraping, ripping open sacks and other stuff you wouldn't want to dull a good knife blade on.

I have a Leatherman Supertool and I must agree that it is a superb tool steel but not a superb knife blade steel. You cannot and should not get a razor sharp blade on a Leatherman. Use a normal blade for sharpness and leave the heavier work for the Leatherman. I also have a Vic Swisschamp and both blades are razor sharp on it. I don't, however, use the blades for cutting, only for scraping. I use my folder or fixed blade for any cutting or slicing work to be done. Hope this helps :)
